Terms of service
Last updated: 30 October 2026. These terms govern your use of TheatrePass. By creating an account, and again each time you buy a plan, you agree to them. They are written in plain English; if anything is unclear, ask us before you buy. The cancellation and refund policy, the acceptable use and abuse policy, the privacy policy, the cookie policy, and the How we use AI statement form part of these terms.
Who we are
TheatrePass is a trading name of SK Illustrations Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales with company number 16062313. Our registered office is 3rd Floor, 86-90 Paul Street, London, EC2A 4NE, United Kingdom, which is also our address for correspondence. You can reach us at hello@theatrepass.co.uk. We are not registered for VAT. These details also appear in your order confirmation.
What TheatrePass is
TheatrePass is an online preparation platform for doctors applying to UK surgical training. It provides digital study content (question banks, model answers, frameworks, guides and audio tutorials) and digital practice services (spoken practice with automated marking, timed AI mock interviews with feedback reports, and peer practice). Together these are the Content and the Services. The Content and Services cover interview preparation today and may in future include revision products for professional examinations and selection assessments, for example the MSRA or the MRCS. These terms apply to all of them, including products added after you first accept these terms.
What it is not
- It is not medical advice, clinical guidance or a substitute for formal training. Content illustrates interview and examination technique, not current clinical protocols, and must never be relied on for patient care. TheatrePass is not a medical device and not clinical decision support.
- It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or approved by any royal college, statutory education body, national recruitment office or examination board, including the Royal Colleges of Surgeons, the Joint Committee on Surgical Training, NHS England, Health Education and Improvement Wales and NHS Education for Scotland. MSRA, MRCS and similar assessments are owned and administered by their respective bodies; any revision products we offer for them are independent study aids.
- It is not a guarantee of any interview score, examination result or training offer, and we make no such claims. Automated feedback is an educational aid generated by artificial intelligence and can be wrong; treat it as one input alongside your own judgement and that of your seniors. The How we use AI statement explains its limits.
Accounts and eligibility
- You must be 18 or over, and either a doctor or a medical student. When you create an account you confirm both, and that confirmation is recorded with your account. You must give accurate account information and keep it up to date.
- The account is personal to you. One account per person; one person per account. Keep your credentials secure and tell us promptly if you suspect unauthorised access.
- Sharing an account, or buying access on behalf of someone else without our written agreement, is a material breach of these terms (see the abuse policy) and can lead to suspension or termination without refund.
What you need to use TheatrePass
TheatrePass runs in a current version of Chrome, Safari, Firefox or Edge on a computer, tablet or phone with a stable internet connection. Spoken practice and mock interviews need a working microphone, and peer practice also needs a camera; the browser asks your permission before either is used. Content is streamed rather than downloaded, so there is nothing to install and no copy protection beyond your login. Nothing we supply is designed to alter your device or other software.
Plans and payment
- A plan is paid once and runs for a fixed period from the day you buy it (three months for an interview plan; 3, 6 or 12 months for an MSRA plan). It grants access to the features listed at purchase for one chosen specialty, with a set number of tutor sessions, mock sittings and Prep Lounge sessions for the whole period, granted on day one. Nothing refreshes and nothing renews: your access ends on the date shown at checkout, and no further payment is ever taken. Reading your reports and progress stays open after a plan ends.
- A tutor session or a mock sitting counts the moment you press Start, even if you leave before you answer. A repeat counts the same as a first go. Reading never counts against anything.
- The only purchase available inside a live plan is an upgrade to a higher plan, priced as the difference between the two plans, keeping the same end date. Bonus mock sittings earned through the referral programme stay on your account and never expire, though they can only be used while a plan is live.
- Prices are shown inclusive of any applicable VAT. Prices can differ by specialty and can change; changes never affect a period you have already paid for.
- Payments are processed by our payment provider. We never see or store your full card details.
- Cancellation rights and refunds are governed by the cancellation and refund policy. In short: at checkout you ask us to open your plan straight away, and once you have opened any of the study content the statutory right to change your mind no longer applies to that content. If you cancel the service parts of a plan within 14 days you pay only for what you have used. Read that policy before you buy.
The free taster
- If you have confirmed your email, chosen your specialty and never had an interview plan, a small set of your specialty's questions opens free: you can read their model answers and practise each one out loud twice with the Virtual Tutor. Everything else needs a plan. The MSRA has no free taster.
- A try counts the moment you press Start, as a tutor session does. Your specialty cannot be changed once chosen; if you chose the wrong one, contact us.
- The taster is once per person. Deleting your account and joining again with the same email address does not open it again.
- The taster is free and comes with no payment, so the refund policy does not apply to it. We can change or withdraw it at any time.
What we promise, and what we do not
We will supply the Content and Services as described on our site and in these terms, and we will provide them with reasonable care and skill. Digital content will be of satisfactory quality and fit for the purpose of interview and examination practice. We do not promise that automated marking, model answers, explanations or interviewer questions are free of error, complete, or up to date with the clinical guidance you would follow at work: they are practice material, produced or reviewed with the help of artificial intelligence, and you should treat any surprising statement with the care you would apply to a colleague's recollection. We do not promise any interview score, ranking, examination result or job offer. We do not promise that the service will be available at every moment, although we tell you about planned maintenance where we can. Your legal rights if something we supply is faulty or not as described, including under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, are unaffected by this section.
Our content and your licence
The questions, model answers, mark schemes, frameworks, guides, audio, feedback rubrics and reports on TheatrePass, and the way they are selected, arranged and presented, are protected by intellectual property rights that belong to TheatrePass or to the parties who license material to us. Where we draw on published sources such as national guidance, official recruitment documents or professional standards, we say so, and those sources remain the property of their publishers. Your plan gives you a personal, non-transferable, non-exclusive licence to use this material for your own preparation. You may not copy it at scale, extract it, scrape it, share it, sell it, publish it, translate it, or use it to build or train a competing product, dataset or model. Personal study notes are fine; reproducing a bank is not. Nothing in these terms transfers ownership to you. The abuse policy sets out how we detect and act on misuse.
No part of TheatrePass, including its content, design, layout, databases and graphics, may be reproduced. You may not create a derivative work from it or adapt it in any way without our prior written consent. If you use the service for anything other than your own individual revision, including copying questions, answers or notes, we will close your account, and you may be liable for damages and other penalties, including criminal prosecution where the law allows it.
Your content, feedback and peer sessions
- You own your recordings, transcripts and uploaded material. You grant us only the limited licence needed to store and process them to provide the service to you, as described in the privacy policy.
- Never include information that identifies a real patient in any answer, recording or upload. This is a hard rule; breaches can lead to termination and, where the law requires, onward reporting.
- If you upload a CV, it must be your own, and like any upload it must not contain information that identifies a patient.
- Peer practice sessions must remain professional. Do not record other participants. The abuse policy explains how peer practice is kept safe, how to report a partner and how we act on reports.
- If you send us ideas or feedback about the service, we can use them without owing you anything and without naming you. We also use practice data in aggregated, anonymised form, for example the proportion of members who score well on a station, to improve our content and to publish general insights; nothing published can identify you.
How we use artificial intelligence
Several parts of the service use artificial intelligence, including the voice that reads questions and turns your speech into text, the marking and feedback on your answers, the interviewer in a timed mock, and reading a CV you choose to upload. The AI makes no decisions about you, its output cannot affect a real interview, examination or application, nobody outside TheatrePass sees it, and every mark can be rerun or queried. Its output can be wrong, incomplete or overconfident, and a model answer can lag the guidance you follow at work. The How we use AI statement describes the providers, explains how marking is calibrated, and gives the address for reporting an output that seems wrong or unsafe.
Service availability and changes
We aim for high availability but do not guarantee uninterrupted service; dependencies include third-party AI, voice and hosting providers. Planned maintenance is announced in advance where practicable. We improve and change features over time. If we materially reduce what a paid plan includes during its term, you may choose a pro-rata refund of the remainder or an equivalent extension.
From time to time we release a feature, specialty or question bank early, labelled as beta or preview. These are real features you can use for practice, but they may change, have gaps or be withdrawn while we finish them, and they do not count towards what a paid plan promises unless the pricing page says otherwise. Your rights if something is faulty are unaffected.
Suspension and termination
- You can close your account at any time from your account page.
- We may suspend or terminate an account for material breach of these terms. For breaches of the abuse policy involving content theft, account sharing or unlawful conduct, termination is without refund of any remaining plan period, to the extent the law allows. For other breaches we will warn you first where reasonable.
- If we withdraw the service entirely, we will refund the unused part of any active plan.
- After your account closes. You can export your feedback reports and saved transcripts from your account page at any time, so do this before you close it. When you close your account we delete your practice data as the privacy policy describes, keep payment records for the period tax law requires, and keep a minimal record of the closure and of any breach of these terms so that we can enforce our rights. The sections on ownership, liability, complaints and governing law continue to apply after closure.
Liability
Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be excluded, and nothing reduces your statutory rights as a consumer, including under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. Subject to that, we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, for loss of earnings or opportunity (including the outcome of any interview, examination or application), or for events outside our reasonable control, and our total liability to you is capped at the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim arose. If you use TheatrePass without paying us anything, our total liability to you is capped at £50.
Events outside our reasonable control means failure of the internet, power or a provider we depend on, industrial action, an emergency, or another event we could not reasonably have prevented. We are not responsible for delay or failure caused by such an event, provided we tell you and do what we reasonably can to restore the service; if such an event stops you using a paid plan for more than seven days in a row we extend your plan by the same period or, if you prefer, refund the affected days pro rata.
Nothing in this section limits our liability under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 if digital content we supply damages your device or other digital content and we failed to use reasonable care and skill.
Complaints
If something has gone wrong, email hello@theatrepass.co.uk with your account email and what happened. We will acknowledge within two working days and give you a full answer within 14 days, or explain why we need longer. If you are not satisfied with our final answer: we are not obliged to use, and do not currently use, an alternative dispute resolution scheme, so the next step is a claim in the courts. Nothing here stops you bringing a claim in the courts described under governing law, including a small claim, at any time. Complaints about how we handle personal data can also go to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
Changes to these terms
We may change these terms to reflect new features, changes in the law or in our providers, or to correct mistakes. A change is material if it reduces what you get, increases what you pay or reduces your rights. For material changes we give you at least 14 days' notice by email and in the app before they take effect, and if you do not accept a material change you may cancel before it takes effect and receive a pro-rata refund of any remaining pre-paid period. Other changes take effect when we post them with a new date at the top of this page. Previous versions are available on request.
Governing law and jurisdiction
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. You can bring proceedings in the courts of England and Wales; if you live in Scotland you may also do so in Scotland, and if you live in Northern Ireland you may also do so in Northern Ireland. Mandatory consumer protections of the part of the UK where you live are unaffected.
General
If any part of these terms is found to be invalid or unfair, the rest continues to apply. If we do not enforce a term promptly, we have not given up the right to enforce it. We may transfer our rights and obligations under these terms to another organisation if we tell you and your rights are not reduced; you may not transfer yours, because the account is personal. Only you and we have rights under these terms, and nobody else can enforce them. These terms, the policies they incorporate and the details on the pricing page when you buy are the whole agreement between us.
