What to expect

Stations, timings and how you’re scored

ST1 is one of the most competitive entry points in UK surgery, and in 2026 your verified self-assessment counted in your final score. In 2026 NHS England recorded about 14.4 applications for each post.

The Structured Questions Station

25 minutes

Clinical skills

Five structured questions in one block, asked directly, with no reading time described.

The guide names no topic areas and warns the details can change; full details come with the interview invitation.

44 structured question scenarios included.

The Communication Skills Station

25 minutes

Personal skills

Three communication skills questions in one block: patients, relatives and colleagues, handled honestly and clearly under pressure.

The official guide names the station but does not confirm an actor, so practise each one as a real conversation.

26 communication scenarios included.

Your CV

Make everything you've done count

It's easy to forget your best examples on the day. Add your CV for personalised feedback: the audit, teaching or research you didn't mention, where it scores on the mark scheme, and anything your CV doesn't back up. We read it once and never store the file.
