What to expect

Stations, timings and how you’re scored

At ST3 your verified self-assessment and one online interview (about 40 minutes in 2026) decide your place in a single national ranking. In 2025 NHS England recorded about 5.2 applications for each post.

The Clinical Station

10 minutes

Clinical skills

5 minutes of reading first

You get 5 minutes to read a patient scenario, then 10 minutes of questions on it and on related topics.

Expect the acute abdomen and the patient who deteriorates after an operation. Two consultants interview you, so give your plan in a safe order and say when you'd call your senior.

28 clinical scenarios included.

The Management Station

10 minutes

Workplace skills

5 minutes of reading first

You get 5 minutes to read a management problem set in the clinical environment, then 10 minutes of questions on it and on related topics.

Expect the panel to push back on your answer. They're testing prioritisation, escalation, governance and whether you stay calm, so keep patient safety first and change only your next step.

22 management scenarios included.

The Professional Development Station

10 minutes

Commitment to specialty

Questions about your career to date, with no reading beforehand and no portfolio in the room. It was called the Portfolio station until 2025.

The interviewers can't see your evidence, so bring real examples from your logbook, audit, teaching and research: what you did, and what it taught you.

54 professional development scenarios included.
