What to expect

Stations, timings and how you’re scored

At ST3 your rank comes from one online interview, which had four stations in 2026. In 2025 NHS England recorded about 4.6 applications for each post.

The Outpatient Scenario

13 minutes

Problem solving

2 minutes of reading first

You read a clinic referral or results letter, then work the case with the panel, symptom first: history, examination and sensible investigations.

Expect a raised PSA, haematuria, stones or a testicular lump, taken through to a plan and what the patient is told.

16 outpatient scenarios included.

The Emergency Scenario

13 minutes

Working under pressure

2 minutes of reading first

The acute urology take: torsion, the obstructed infected kidney, retention and priapism.

Manage it in a safe order, say no to the unsafe option, and escalate the way a registrar would.

19 emergency scenarios included.

The Communication Station

13 minutes

Personal skills

2 minutes of reading first

A difficult conversation in real time: bad news, an error and the duty of candour, or an angry relative.

The panel is watching how clearly and sensitively you handle it.

10 communication scenarios included.

The Skills Station

13 minutes

Clinical knowledge

2 minutes of reading first

The 2026 interview was online, so you talk a procedure through rather than perform it: the set-up, the kit, the steps and the complications.

If the panel keeps asking for more, say what you haven't covered yet: a complication, a safety check or what you'd tell the patient.

11 skills scenarios included.
